Background of the Study
Hausa folktales from rural Kano are a rich repository of narrative diversity, reflecting the multifaceted cultural, historical, and social experiences of the community. These folktales embody a wide range of narrative structures, themes, and stylistic devices that have been passed down orally through generations (Bello, 2023). The diversity of these narratives is evident in the varied use of metaphors, allegories, and symbolic imagery, which not only entertain but also serve as vehicles for moral instruction and cultural preservation. Rural Kano, with its strong oral traditions, offers a unique setting where narrative diversity can be studied in depth. Scholars have noted that the multiplicity of narrative voices in these folktales contributes to a dynamic storytelling culture that adapts to changing societal norms while retaining core cultural values (Sani, 2024). This study assesses the narrative diversity of Hausa folktales, examining the variations in narrative style, plot structure, and character development. By analyzing a corpus of folktales collected from rural communities, the research aims to document the richness of Hausa oral traditions and provide insights into the mechanisms of cultural transmission (Abdullahi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although Hausa folktales are recognized for their narrative richness, there is a paucity of systematic studies that focus on the diversity of narrative structures in rural Kano. Existing literature often emphasizes thematic content while neglecting the intricacies of narrative form and stylistic variation (Bello, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how narrative diversity functions as a tool for cultural expression and identity formation. Additionally, modernization poses a threat to the transmission of these diverse narratives. The study aims to address these issues by critically examining the narrative forms present in Hausa folktales and evaluating their role in preserving cultural heritage.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to Hausa folktales collected from rural Kano and does not encompass urban narratives or contemporary retellings.
